Four students practice the first section of the Slow Set: running time is about 6 minutes.
The idea to make the movie of the four students from London came to me in the middle of the night while at camp in Greece when I could not sleep. I had tried some experiments with still images in slide show format earlier in the year, but had not used this concept for the form. I wanted to create something simple showing the similarity between students. The images were taken with a Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 digital camera using VGA size images. Taking stills allowed me to make a different type of movie using the iPhoto software on my G4 Powerbook to export still images to Quicktime. The stills were shot between 16.15 and 17.00 over two days. The background gives some context and shows the progression of the form. I did not use a tripod so had to move along with the student keeping sunk and stable and still as much as possible, and this allowed me to really focus on each element of the form. I needed to know what to look for. I learned a lot from starting with Jagdish in terms of positioning, the number of shots required and that were achievable with the camera. I realised that if we had more stills the transitions would be clearer to see, and applied this to the images of Armand, Arthur and Gordon. This was a new learning experience for me. Please wait for the page download to complete (a few minutes on DSL, much longer on a modem, perhaps up to an hour). Note that the movie file is about 9 Megabytes.
